In a sketch, Hope play an Air Force fighter pilot-trainee who loses his P 51 jet trainer. Well played by everyone, especially by Hope regular peter Leeds who plays Hope's commanding officer. In 1980, Hope decided to hire a pair of documentary producers, Andrew Solt and malcolm Leo, to produce a retrospective of his entire library of overseas Christmas shows he had performed for the troops during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The six-hour retrospective aired on two consecutive weekends. Andrew Solt and Malcolm Leo had established themselves as the official Ed Sullivan Show documentarians so their treatment of Hope's material was traeted with great care. The specials were among Hope's highest-rated in the 1980s.You can read all about the how Hope worked with his guests and his writers and what happened behind-the-scenes of these classic Bob Hope video clips by reading my book "THE LAUGH MAKERS: A Behind-the-Scenes Tribute to Bob Hope's Incredible Gag Writers," chosen a "Top 20" 2009 Year End Pick by Leonard Maltin who says... PART 2: For our centerpiece sketch, we were lucky to book the talented character actor Kenneth Mars who had been hilarious as the Nazi playwright in Mel Brooks's The Producers. We cast him as the academy commandant who discovers a cadet who has somehow fallen through the administrative cracks and has been attending classes for twenty-six years. An intelligence officer (Loni Anderson) has been sent from Washington to head off the potential scandal: Cadet Hope is summoned. HOPE: Cadet Hope reporting as ordered, sir! Flaps up, wheels down, zeroes at eleven o'clock, coming in on a wing and a prayer, bombs away, A-OK, roger, over and out! LONI: What does all that mean? HOPE: I have no idea, but it sure made a star out of Jimmy Stewart. PART 1: Throughout my years on Hope's staff, he strove to maintain his image as "America's Entertainer to the Troops" and was on constant alert for an opportunity to fly somewhere and stage a show for the military. During the years between Vietnam and the war in the Middle East, he decided to entertain the US forces right here at home. In May 1980, we packed up our survival gear and trekked to the rarefied air of Colorado Springs, Colorado for our first Hope birthday special at the United States Air Force Academy. An Air Force troop-carrier swooped in low over the crowd of cadets, their families and friends assembled in the spring chill of the Academy's Mile-High Stadium. Five stunt parachutists popped from the plane's underbelly like newborn guppies and drifted toward the infield, making lazy figure-8's against the azure blue of the cloudless sky. They trailed streams of white smoke for even greater dramatic effect. At the last moment, four of the airborne commandos peeled off, leaving a lone jumper to make a perfect two-point landing mid-field as a crowd of cadet musicians, instruments in hand, rushed onto the grass to welcome him. The lone jumper unbuckled himself from the pile of blue silk beside him. Slowly, he removed his Snoopy goggles to reveal his true identity — it was Bob Hope! Okay, so we had smuggled him out there hidden among the musicians. Still, the effect was marvelous. Acknowledging the cheers of an incredulous crowd, our seventy-six year-old Great Waldo ... |

In May 1987, the Hope Squadron was airlifted to Pope Air Force base in Fayetteville, North Carolina aboard the personal plane of Gen. Dwayne Cassidy, the chief of the Air Force's Military Airlift Command. We would tape a 90-minute special there celebrating both Hope's eightyfifth birthday and the seventy-fifth anniversary of the outfit that had transported him from base-to-base during his overseas Christmas tours. Also on board sharing the general's special VIP quarters that included a kitchen (complete with chef ) were Dolores Hope, Lucille Ball and her husband Gary Morton and the Hopes' toy poodle, "Toby." The pampered pooch was seldom left at home whenever the Hopes traveled. Since Hope believed that spaying constituted cruel-and-unusual punishment, the catered-to canine had left his distinctive scent on some of the most expensive hotel suite curtains in the world — including his favorites in New York's posh Waldorf Towers. You can read all about the how Hope worked with his guests and his writers and what happened behind-the-scenes of these classic Bob Hope video clips by reading my book "THE LAUGH MAKERS: A Behind-the-Scenes Tribute to Bob Hope's Incredible Gag Writers," chosen a "Top 20" 2009 Year End Pick by Leonard Maltin who says... Bob Hope delivers his monologue for an audience of GIs and their families at Pope Air Force Base. (Excerpted from THE LAUGH MAKERS) In May 1987, the Hope Squadron was airlifted to Pope Air Force base in Fayetteville, North Carolina aboard the personal plane of Gen. Also on board sharing the general's special VIP quarters that included a kitchen (complete with chef ) were Dolores Hope, Lucille Ball and her husband Gary Morton and the Hopes' toy poodle, "Toby." Hope would meet us at Pope after flying in from a personal-appearance tour on the eastern-seaboard. Our guest stars, Glen Campbell, Barbara Mandrell, Don Johnson, Emanuel Lewis, Brooke Shields and Phylicia Rashad, were waiting to go to work. Over the next several days, we rehearsed the show that would be taped before a crowd of four thousand servicemen and their families — as well as soldiers from nearby Ft. Bragg. The monologue would be taped with the latest military hardware in the background to remind the viewers at home just how the Defense Department was spending their taxes — payback for their picking-up a good portion of the production costs. You can read all about the how Hope worked with his guests and his writers and what ... |

Diana Ross sings "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on Bob Hope's first of three military specials in the 1980s. This would be followed by a special at West Point in 1981 and at Annapolis in 1982. The trilogy would turn out to be among Hope's highest-rated specials of the 1980s. |
