MIDDLESEX, Vt. -- A cow spot shaped in the form of a pig is plastered on about 30 Vermont state troopers' cars. The cow itself is part of the Vermont State Police emblem, a scene complete with mountains and a pasture. While the image is offensive enough to have all the decals removed, many people -- including high-up elected officials -- are finding humor in it. For Vermont state Sen. John Campbell, the jokes were flying. "It's just like 'Where's Waldo?' People say, 'where's the pig?" he said Thursday evening. "Some say, 'Give him more time,' or others say, 'Give him the artist of the year award. I think it shows a little bit of creativity." A former police officer, Campbell said the term "pig" used to be very degrading in the force, but over the years, it has softened. "It became more of a kind of funny thing. In fact, we used to have our football games where the state police used to play the local police and we used to call it the 'Pig Bowl,'" Campbell said. Vermont State Police are working to identify the individual responsible for the "artistry." Out of the force's 220 marked cruisers, 30 fell victim. The emblems were printed at the Vermont Correctional Industries Print Shop, said state police. "It was not anything offensive," said Campbell. "I haven't spoken to any other troops on the ground, but I would hope they would not take it as an insult." Still, VSP said they've destroyed any remaining pig stickers. From Hope's earliest tours of military bases during World War II, it was obvious that he enjoyed a unique rapport with young people. So in the fall of 1979, he made his first post-Vietnam foray into the academic world — during the Vietnam years, his stand on the war made college campuses off limits — with a carefully arranged special entitled "Bob Hope on Campus." Co-produced by Linda (his daughter) and Frank Badami II, the ninety-minute show would take Hope from the University of Southern California to the University of Alabama to Florida's "Gator Growl" with classroom stops along the way at Indiana State University, Harvard University and Colgate. As with the overseas military tours, weeks in advance, we were sent plenty of reference material on each school, so the jokes could be tailored to fit every audience on Hope's itinerary. Guest stars included Vanessa Williams, Morgan Fairchild, Joe Montana, and Dionne Warwick who dropped in for a sketch or stand-up routine, but as they had in the military shows, the monologues dominated and defined the tour. The special was such a success. OK so this was at a State Fair and all, but still, this guy was by far the worst magician i have ever seen. His jokes were awful, and his act was even worse. The trick here is simple to understand and follow. After a couple of his "tricks" we decided to leave because there was nothing magical about this clown. |

WikiLeaks' release of hundreds, and eventually hundreds of thousands, of secret US diplomatic cables has drawn sharp rebuke from all reaches of the US government. But as calls to prosecute WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange mount, some have taken their outrage a step further. Republican Congressman Peter King, who is widely expected to become the next chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, is calling for WikiLeaks to be classified as a terrorist organization. Sarah Palin wants Julian Assange to be handled (read: killed) in the same manner as a Taliban or al-Qaeda leader. Are they right? What would be the implications of treating WikiLeaks as a terrorist organization? This funny story is true. This is the first time I ever told the story on stage. I met some guys out one night and after the bar closed they asked if I wanted to go "party" at their house. I didn't know they were cops and watch the video to see what happens. I hope you like it. The show was taped at The State Theater in Falls Church, VA. |
